update you on recent changes in UK Border Agency (“UKBA”) rules regarding English Language requirements which may affect you depending on your circumstances.
At this stage of the year some applicants have already reached the University’s required level of English Language, either through previous studies taken in English, or because they have taken an English Language Test such as IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson Academic.* Other applicants have yet to meet our English language requirement. Recently however, UKBA have introduced their own rules for students who are applying for a Tier 4 visa for study in the UK.* These rules are additional to the University’s requirements and are compulsory for anyone who wishes to obtain a visa to enter the UK to study.
As a condition of sponsoring student visas for Bachelors, Masters or Research Degree programmes, the University is now required by UKBA to assess each student to be competent to at least Level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Language (CEFR) in all four components of English, - Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.
Students who have taken IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson Academic or one of the UKBA's other approved Secure English Language Tests now need to obtain the minimum score in each element in order to obtain a Tier 4 visa:
•************ IELTS – minimum of 5.5 in each element
•************ TOEFL IBT – Minimum of 21 in Listening, 22 in Reading, 23 in Speaking, 21 in Writing.********
•************ Pearson PTE Academic*- Minimum of 59 in each element.
Students need to achieve these levels as one of the minimum requirements for a Tier 4 (General) Student visa, and this is in addition to meeting the University’s overall English language requirement for the course.
Further details on UKBA approved tests, and their *****alencies which include IELTS, TOEFL, Pearson Academic and Cambridge ESOL can be downloaded from the UKBA website at:*

Please note: If the English Language condition on your offer was not based on achieving a score in IELTS, TOEFL or Pearson, (- for example if you have been educated in English, or have taken a different qualification such as an A Level in English), then these UKBA changes may not apply. Please check with the latest advice from the UKBA.
Students who are nationals of majority English speaking countries (as defined by UKBA), and students who have taken a course delivered in English in a majority English speaking country are exempt from this rule. *
