In the US, the master’s is mostly a coursework, just like any university system that offer regular classes. This means you have to finish a specific number of hours to get the degree. Most US schools require a completion of 36 hours (it can be more or less). So, a graduate student, you should take at least 3 courses (=9 hours) every semester. Mathematically speaking (and I’m bad at math, by the way), 9 hours in 4 semesters would be a total of 36 hours. Another option is that you can take summer courses and finish in 3 or 2 semesters, but I don’t recommend that. I believe in “slowly, but surely” and learn the most during the whole program
You don’t have to write a thesis by the end of the program like in the UK, New Zealand or Australia. In every course you take during the MA program, you’ll do projects, have exams, write papers and make academic research in many different forms. By the end of the program, you’ll present a portfolio that includes your CV, samples of your papers, research…etc for the department to approve it. Congratulations then, it’s as simple as that! :) Also, you can choose any topic of your interest as long as your professor approves it
Although I could’ve finished it in a shorter time, I got my master’s in 2 years (4 semesters). So when you search for any MA program, read the Degree Plan Requirements carefully. Here’s an example

Finally, some schools provide a complete handbook for the questions and answers that a student has, just like UNC for example

I hope that helps. Good luck

Yeah that's right, and that's why I said most US schools. The opposite is also true. In some Australian universities, for example, they started to use the American system which is applying both the coursework and the thesis routes. So it depends on what the student prefers after all. Not only that, but also there are many types for the Masters other than the two main ones Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS). Here's a long list of those types
